Do you need a receiving line? No, but you should make a point of welcoming every guests personally. Some couples opt to go table to table at the reception, but you should realize that it can take twice as long as a traditional receiving line.
Others put a modern spin on the idea by informally greeting guests as they enter the cocktail area. Another idea is after the recessional, you and your groom should return to the front and walk up the center aisle and dismiss your guests row by row.

What Do You Do If...
The Receiving Line is out the door.
Solution: Limit who's in the receiving line to just you and the groom. Your parents and bridal party can circulate among the guests.
